Patrick Hall If They Should Accidentally Fall...

Sydney Contemporary

12 - 15 September

Despard Gallery - Booth A02

The installation If They Should Accidentally Fall, composed of multiple illuminated wall mounted boxes and interactive sound shelves, was originally exhibited as part of Dark Mofo 2019.  Individual components capture figures constructed from recycled materials, LED lights, sounds components and spirit bottles.  Overlaid with narrative text, suggestive of a devotional script or parable, Hall creates a place of intimate confession, to explore the passing of time and the slow erosion of belief.

This digital exhibition accompaniment features audio and video excerpts from Tasmanian artist Patrick Hall’s installation If They Should Accidentally Fall, exhibited with Despard Gallery at Sydney Contemporary 2019.

The guide is divided into two sections, video narratives and audio insights.  The videos capture installation snippets and are accompanied by Patrick reading from his distinctive narrative texts, which are etched into individual works.  The audio component offers the listener a rare insight into individual artworks, with Patrick in his own words, providing personal reflections and background into concept development.

Patrick Hall is a Hobart-based artist whose works span furniture making, public art and sculpture. His distinctive style is characterised through a unique blend of design, interactive components and recycling. His works are intricate and idiosyncratic, using poetic text, laced with personal meaning. Artworks are often emotive and intimate, combining semi-autobiographical narratives with rich storytelling, that have a universal reach.

Hall has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work has featured at Sculpture, Objects, Functional Art [SOFA] in Chicago and New York City, becoming the first non-American artist selected to feature in the exhibition catalogue in 2001.  Hall’s work is widely collected, both privately and within public institutions nationally.  Hall also has had a room dedicated to his work at the Museum of Old and New Art [MONA] since 2017.

Patrick Hall is represented by Despard Gallery.
